Okay let me start be stating that I am the luckiest mom in the world!  I have two of the most adorable kids on the planet!  This fact also gives me the excuse to make special treats now and then.  So I am trying to decide what would be healthy…hmmm….I decide on strawberries!

One cup of whole strawberries has only 46 calories which makes this beautiful berry one of the lowest calorie fruits!  It contains 11 g of carbohydrates, 1 g protein and only .5 g fat.  This same cup contains 85 mg of Vitamin C, more than 100% of the daily allowance, which is more than an orange.  Strawberries also contain 220 mg potassium.

Strawberries get their bright red color from antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins. These help the body to reduce inflammation and counteract the effects of muscle damage from exercise.

And besides all the nutritional jargon-they are delicious….

Especially when covered in dark chocolate!

Dark chocolate is rich in cell-protecting antioxidants — Packed with natural antioxidants, dark chocolate sits in the same good-for-you category as green tea and blueberries. Recent studies have shown dark chocolate may be good for your heart. In short-term clinical trials, dark chocolate has reduced blood pressure, improved blood flow, showed mild anti-clotting effects and may help prevent plaque formation in arteries.

Despite its sweet reputation, dark chocolate has a low glycemic index similar to that of oatmeal — meaning it does not spike your blood sugar.

Ahh-so a perfect after school and pre-run snack!!
